This page is intended for members of the Western PA YMCA Swim League to discuss the pros, cons, and issues related to a change to scoring in our dual meets.
Scoring is set forth in section K of the league rules. Sections 1 and 2 are as follows:
1. Each age group will be scored separately using 5-3-1 and 7-0. The age group with the highest point total at the end of the dual meet will be the winner.
2. When compiling the meet results, each age group win accounts for 2 points for that team. The meet results are then reported as divisions won or lost with a combined score totaling 20 points. In the case of a tie in an age group each team will receive 1 point.
The question for the league is whether dual meets should be scored in their entirety rather than by age group. And, if so, what scoring method should be used.
Coaches (and other interested parties) are encouraged to post their thoughts and opinions in the comment section. (Please be advised that comments will be monitored and inappropriate comments will be deleted)

Divisions can be used to motivate teams that may only have 1 or 2 strong divisions to, at least, try and win a division if their team is not in a position to win meets. Also, a score of 7-3 comes across better to younger swimmers than 274-112. A smaller team that has 3 empty divisions may be able to win a meet 6-4, but if you score it with 5-3-1,7-0 and the small team gives up 3 boys divisions to a larger team the larger team will get over 200 points. I am in favor of keeping scoring as is.

I was reading throught the 2009 USA Swimming Rule Book looking for scoring and I found on the bottom of page 26 - Dual Meet scoring and it is 5-3-1 and 7 - 0 so we now know where it comes from, and since we follow USA Swimming rules I feel it should stay the same.

Back a few years when the USA-S rules were adopted by the YMCA of the USA questions came up concerning USA, YMCA and Local swim league modifications to the USA rulebook. The National YMCA overrides the start end water depth (Y=5'), taching race starts depth (Y=9'), the dual meet event list (88 events), age group birthday requirements and the WPYSL overrides the 5 lanes or less scoring procedure, no sweep rule, exhibition swims, number of times a competitor can participate for points (dual meets = 4..2I+2R or 3I+1R)etc.. As a trainer, we were instructed to include these changes in the LI,LII clinics so that all understand that we adopted the technical rules section of the USA-S rulebook except what the National YMCA and Local Swim league (WPYSL)choose to override. It is important to know and understand the modifications to the rules for uniform application and enforcement.
